RTW: Change of Season

From YA Highway:

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question to write about on our own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This week's topic: October!! It is SO fall! How does your writing (place, time, inspiration, etc) change with the seasons?

I wish I could say I was emerging from my writing cave to blog a little, but the truth is, I've been out of the cave for more than a week (and it's time to go back in).  We had a huge(ly successful) event for work last Thursday night and I worked around the clock to get ready for it (mainly because I, uh, procrastinate and leave everything for the last minute).  Hammer Guy helped me fold programs at the kitchen table late into the night on Wednesday.  I took "in-house" printing to a new level.

Once the event was over, I was completely exhausted... and then had Hammer Guy's birthday and a camping trip on the weekend.

We're not really campers - or at least we weren't before this weekend.  Hammer Guy used to camp a lot and I have great memories of sleeping out under the stars at campsites along the North Shore during college -- without tents.  We all had a wonderful time and HG bought me an enamel tea kettle and four mugs because even if you have to use a latrine and have no running water for two days, you should never, ever go without coffee.

We had lovely weather - it was hot for late summer and got chilly at night.  Birdy and I explored and went on nature walks while the boys did Scout things like archery and a climbing wall.  We relaxed under a canopy of crisp autumn leaves, the breeze earthy and rich.

I love fall.

How does the change of season change my writing?  It doesn't, really.  Any season of the year, my writing time is random and precious and unpredictable.

I do get to enjoy Pumpkin Lattes at Caribou when I write there.  That sounds wonderful right now.  I think it's time to schedule a write-in very soon!

What do you love best about fall?  Does your writing change with the seasons?

  1. Your camping picture is adorable! Some of my favorite memories with my husband are our camping trips. And you are so right -- there is no excuse for no coffee. I can pee in a bush, but by golly there better be a cup of joe when I wake up in the morning! I hope you enjoyed the excursion from the writing cave (sounds like you did!)

  2. I miss camping in the fall. I did it a lot as a kid and have gotten away from it. My writing does change with the seasons. I get more inspired in the fall, so I have more ideas. I tend to start projects this time of year. I just wrapped up my last WIP and am ready for something new.

  3. I love pretty much everything about fall - cooler weather, falling leaves, pumpkins! Everyone keeps mentioning pumpkin lattes and I have actually never had one, I definitely need to try it!

  4. I love fall ...pumpkin flavored things, apple flavored things, falling leaves, scarves, cool weather, boots!!!etc. I agree that my writing cave etc doesn't really change with the seasons. I just keep writing (or not writing lol).

  5. Autumn is my favourite time of the year. :) Time to get the soup, mochas and hot chocolate out and put on the cosy cardigans!

And then there is Halloween which is a horror writer's dream. My writing is always horror and supernatural whatever the season and weather but Halloween just gives me a little extra motivation. :)

  6. I think my writing isn't necessarily affected by the seasons, but my motivation to write sure is. With the shorter days in winter and the longer hours of darkness, I find all I really want to do is curl up with a blanket, read, and drink tea. I have a writing schedule/routine that seems to help combat this lack of motivation, so that's good. Sounds like you had a great time camping! :)

  7. My writing usually changes with the season. Fall and winter are incredibly inspiring for me; I love the coziness of the seasons as the weather gets colder and I have no interest in braving the winter weather when it gets really cold and icy unless I absolutely have to. Last winter was not cold enough for me!!

    Your camping pictures are great!
