From YA Highway:

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question to write about on our own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This week's topic:
What yearbook "most" category (also known as superlatives) would your character win?

Interesting question!  This would make a good character-building exercise.  I really had to think about this one.

I'm going to use Cat and Brad from CLOUD 9.  We don't actually see either Cat or Brad in their high school settings because C9 takes place during the summer.

Cat's new to her school and keeps to herself, so she doesn't have many friends and more than likely wouldn't make the list.  But that's no fun, so I'll go with:
  • Most Likely to Win Top Chef or
  • Most Likely to Cut Class for a Run Around Lake Harriet
source
Brad, on the other hand, has lived in the same town his whole life, gone to school with the same kids, was captain of the hockey team, and according to Cat, "is as much a part of Cloud 9 as the Astro Slide and the spinning milkshake."

Brad would definitely be voted:
  • Most Likely to Take Over the Family Business

Did you receive an "award" like this?

  1. Haha these sound like two cool characters! I never was the type to receive these awards in high school. :/ Typical wallflower writer here...

    1. I don't believe I received any award like this, either, although my memory is a bit fuzzy. I would have wanted Most Likely to Succeed, of course. Ha.

  2. I love Cat's random reason to skip class. I'm already getting a good sense of her character from these awards she could win.

I was a wallflower at school too so I did my best to make sure no-one would consider me for any awards. I wasn't really keen on being part of that because some of the awards we had to make votes for were awful! Post totty, wannabe posh totty, most like to end up insane, in prison... dear god, our yearbook team were brutal!

    1. Seriously? You had an award for posh totty? Ugh. With awards like those, who wants one!

  3. I love reading these little tidbits about people's characters. So much fun! I love that each of them are fully-formed with complete backstories and all that. :)

I did not receive any such award. I was more of a 'fade into the woodwork' kinda gal in high school. Plus, I switched schools for my last semester of high school and was an even bigger nobody at the school I graduated from (which I was totally okay with). If I had been given a superlative, it would have been something like: Most Likely to End Up Somewhere She Never In a Million Years Imagined. lol :D

    1. So... I take it you Ended Up Somewhere You Never in a Million Years Imagined? :)

It has been fun reading through these tonight! :) Light group, which has been nice for the holiday.

  4. "Most Likely to Win Top Chef"--LOL, I like that one! :) We didn't have a yearbook, so the whole superlatives thing was definitely an American thing--not something I knew much about personally. Had we done something like that, I dread to think what I would have been awarded! Nothing positive, I'm sure. If I was lucky, they wouldn't have nominated me for anything. :)

    1. I can't recall if we had anything like that or not - the farther I get from those days, the fuzzier those memories get. :) These days I believe schools are a bit more creative than in my day...

  5. "Worst to Bring Home to Mom" and "Best to Bring Home to Mom" haha

I probably came closest to the "Next Einstein" award. Though I am proud of my single vote for "Most Athletic" (And no, it did not come from me. But I'm about 50% sure he was being sarcastic).

    1. Those are some interesting awards! Next Einstein - love it! And sarcasm goes a long way....

  6. Great post, Sara! You and I had an exchange (from our respective decks) on Twitter the other day (you were bothered by tracker jackers and I, by an irate mockingjay!). And now I followed you to your blog via RTW. And I am so excited to realize that you are in MN. I live in Southern MN and it is really hard to connect with people in person in the area. Could you pretty please e-mail me? I'm interested to know more about some of the MN writing groups that you have listed over on the side bar that you belong to. E-mail: kitty.hietala@gmail.com. I've thought about joining the SCBWI but it doesn't look like the MN chapter is all that active? And I'm really interested in the MNYA Writers! Sorry for the long comment. Hope to hear from you! :)

  7. Sounds like you have these two really worked out and know them well.

  8. Good Job. Most likely to win Top Chef is a good one. I wonder what Cat's specialty is? Now I'm hungry.
In high school I was voted Drama Queen which is the superlative that always went to the theatre kids. I was never a lead, but I was a bit overdramatic from time to time. I was also voted Class clown but I had to choose one.

  9. I made it through high school superlative-free thanks to my inherent geekiness. Only the "cool kids" or our class presidents ever got awarded superatives. Maybe about... ten people out of 300, with some repeats. I was totally okay with that, though!

I think I kind-of love your characters so far, based on their "mosts"

  10. Hahah, I love Cat's description of Brad! I don't think my high school even had superlatives, if they did they completely escaped my notice!

    1. Thanks! :) I seriously think I need to do a bit of research to see if we had these awards in high school - now I'm curious!

  11. Jodi from my book Touch of Death would get Most Likely to Raise the Dead thanks to her necromancer abilities.

  12. I was always really quiet and shy in high school - except around all the other marching band kids. And since it was only the other band kids who knew I existed, I didn't win any superlatives.

It's all good, though, I was having way too much fun to care about my lack of popularity :)

    1. I was in marching band, too. On the Fourth of July I was just thinking about how much I hated playing John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." :)
