RTW: Word Up
It's Wednesday -- time for another Road Trip on the YA Highway.

This Week's Topic: What words do you absolutely hate? Which ones do you adore?
This is a fun topic, and a few words immediately came to mind:
Pop -- I am one of a handful of Minnesotans that calls the carbonated beverage soda, not pop.
Slacks, Trousers -- both are equally bothersome. I knew a guy at college called Slacks. Hmm. I think I might have to use that.
Lice, Louse -- these words and everything they stand for just make me cringe.
On a side note, I find it very amusing (and sometimes annoying) when people mix up common phrases. For example, I recently overheard this: "I was wondering if you could spread a little light on the situation." Another good one: "He always ceases to amaze me."
Anyway, onto a couple of words that I love:
Mental -- as in, "Are you mental?" asked Ron Weasley.
Spectacular -- this always brings to mind Franck Eggelhoffer (Martin Short) in Father of the Bride.
So, how about you? Words you hate? Words you adore?

along the same lines as slacks and trousers...the word "blouse" weirds me out

ReplyDeleteI agree with all of your "hate" words. I wish I would've thought of louse and lice...those just sound wrong. I also HATE the word indubitably--it's just all wrong. Spectacular is an awesome word! I think I might start using it instead of "awesome".

I actually kind of like trousers. It brings to mind a fancy type of pants. :)

ReplyDeleteI much prefer "trousers" to "pants." This is because my formerly-British mind still tends to equate "pants" with "underpants." (Did Maureen Johnson consider this when she came up with her book title game? Probably. :) ). And "pop" is a word one might think I would like given that I like onomatopoeias (onomatopoeiae?), but it is used in so many different ways (music, drink, sound, etc), that it's almost meaningless.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on slacks. My mom calls them slacks. I read a book last year where the author described the woman's pants as slacks and immediately I pictured this older lady as the MC. Don't call them slacks!!!
And I agree on mental. It makes me think of HP too.
I say pop. I saw a map on Facebook that was color coded for what word people used, pop, soda, or coke. Minnesota was all "pop" except this tiny little spot up north where they were "soda".

ReplyDeleteCalling a drink "pop" does sound weird. I usually say the name of a drink. Coke, sprite. I've never been used to calling them soda, pop or fizzy drinks.
Trousers is a terrible word. And lice/louse just makes me itchy, haha...
ReplyDeleteEww, 'slacks' is a nasty word. Veronica Roth used it in DIVERGENT and I was like "Really? Slacks?" As for messed up expressions, how about this gem: "Maybe it's a blessing in the skies." Gah! :-)

ReplyDeleteand I love mental, in fact, my husband calls me a mentalist - in a ron weasely, not tv show kind of way. Cool words.
I use blouse and trousers all the time. Then again, I'm trapped in the mid-nineteeth century.

"He always ceases to amaze me." I had to laugh a bit at that one and its inadvertent sarcasm--it reminds me of the mangled phrase "I could care less."

I probably overuse spectacular. And...I honestly never knew the different between slacks and trousers and whatever...I just call all non-jean pants...well...pants.
