Top Ten Musical Valentines
The brilliant minds at YA Highway are hosting a Valentine's Day Blog Lovefest. Here's my contribution - my Top Ten Musical Valentines -- some of my favorite love songs.
10. In My Life -- the Beatles
9. More Than a Woman -- the BeeGees
8. Can't Stop Lovin' You -- Van Halen
7. I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm -- Dean Martin
6. Eternal Flame -- the Bangles
5. Not Enough Time -- INXS
4. Never Tear Us Apart -- INXS
3. At Last -- Etta James
2. Dream a Little Dream of Me -- Ella Fitzgerald
1. The Very Thought of You -- Nat King Cole
Bonus: My Funny Valentine -- Frank Sinatra
As a teenager, I pretty much hated Valentine's Day. As Sandy Olson from Grease would say, I was no stranger to heartbreak in those days. Back then, my favorite Valentine's Day song was I'm Shooting Cupid by Voice of the Beehive: "You've gone and made me want someone I can never have, and don't think I don't hear you laughing." Yeah, I was bitter.
Worst Valentine's Day Ever: junior year. My "boyfriend," who had been avoiding me since Christmas, finally got around to giving me my Christmas present. We were standing in the high school parking lot in the bitter cold after a hockey game. The present, a stuffed Velveteen Rabbit in a Christmas stocking, had been rolling around his trunk for six weeks. He handed it over and then told me he didn't think "we" were going to work.
Really?
You know what they say, every rose has its thorn.

INXS -- Never Tear Us Apart
Ugh that he handed you the present first - you should have used it to hit him in the head.
ReplyDeleteLove "Never Tear Us Apart."
But my #1 is Faithfully by Journey
Yes, I should have whacked him over the head with it!
DeleteOh my goodness, your boyfriend was such a jerk. I can't even imagine. Agree with jennifer, you should have whacked him upside the head with it. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the playlist!
Thanks! Hindsight and all that.... Hitting him over the head with the rabbit would have made for an even better story!
DeleteYou already have some great songs on that list, Sara!
ReplyDeleteI could never understand the mentality of those guys that would keep a girl stringing along when it was clear they were no longer "into " them. (Or at least I don't *want* to imagine why they might do something like that.) That's just cruel. A stuffed toy across the head *at least*... :)
Thanks, Colin! He was a nice enough guy - I honestly believe that he didn't want to hurt my feelings, but I don't think he realized that ignoring me was only making it worse. :)
DeleteOh my goodness--Eternal Flame! I remember trying to tape that song off my radio by holding up a stereo to it's speakers. Of course I had to wait and wait until it played on the radio to capture that sucker. :D
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene in the Ramona and Beezus movie is when Hobart and Aunt Bea are in Hobart's jeep and he finds a mix tape Bea made him with this song on it. Have you seen it?
DeleteOh, and I did the same thing for Hall & Oates songs.
Not very good at taking a hint. If your "boyfriend" has been avoiding you for six weeks... it's like that time my "girlfriend" moved and forgot to tell me.
ReplyDelete#10. You Ought To Know -Alannis Morisette
#9. Love Stinks -J.Geils Band
#8. You Give Love A Bad Name -Bon Jovi
#7. Don't Go Away Mad -Motley Crue
#6. I Don't Believe in Love -Queensryche
#5. Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye -Motorhead
#4. Song For The Dumped -Ben Folds Five
#3. Somebody Kill Me -Adam Sandler in the Wedding Singer
#2. King of Broken Hearts -Ringo Starr (I'm just happy to be here)
#1. Portuguese Love Theme -Love Actually Soundtrack
HA! Excellent list. "Hey, psycho - we're not gonna discuss this, OK, it's over. Please get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up."
DeleteDavid's list needs Kinison's "Wild Thing."
DeleteOh yeah! And Weird Al, One More Minute. "I'd rather clean the bathrooms of Grand Central Station with my tongue than spend one more minute with you."
DeleteFavorites: "Sea of Love" by The Honeydrippers. "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel.
ReplyDeleteGotta love that boombox scene from Say Anything.
