RTW: Making Waves
Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's
contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question to write
about on our own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination
and get everybody's unique take on the topic.
This week's topic:
In honor of the end of the Olympics, share your favorite sports book.
As expected, the Olympics completely sucked me in. I couldn't write, I could barely read. All I wanted to do was watch competitions of sports I normally care nothing about. My kids really got into it, staging diving events and beach volleyball games in the living room. Other favorites were gymnastics, swimming, and archery.
One book immediately came to mind when I thought about my favorite sports book: FORGET YOU by Jennifer Echols.
From Goodreads:
There’s a lot Zoey would like to forget. Like how her father has knocked up his twenty-four- year old girlfriend. Like Zoey’s fear that the whole town will find out about her mom’s nervous breakdown. Like darkly handsome bad boy Doug taunting her at school. Feeling like her life is about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how, using her famous attention to detail to make sure she’s the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player Brandon.
But then Zoey is in a car crash, and the next day there’s one thing she can’t remember at all—the entire night before. Did she go parking with Brandon, like she planned? And if so, why does it seem like Brandon is avoiding her? And why is Doug—of all people— suddenly acting as if something significant happened between the two of them?
Zoey dimly remembers Doug pulling her from the wreck, but he keeps referring to what happened that night as if it was more, and it terrifies Zoey to admit how much is a blank to her.
Controlled, meticulous Zoey is quickly losing her grip on the all-important details of her life—a life that seems strangely empty of Brandon, and strangely full of Doug.
Zoey and Doug are on the swim team together, so, uh, yeah, it's a sports book.
I love this book. I've read it at least four times. Doug, Doug, Doug.
That is all.
What's your favorite "sports" book? Did you love the Spice Girls reunion at the closing ceremony as much as I did?
Gold Medalist |
There are sports in it, so it counts! ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this one yet, but I love Jennifer Echols!
This is my favorite Jennifer Echols book for sure! Great characters.
DeleteAs a former swimmer, I am very intrigued! I'm adding this to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope you like it! :)
DeleteOh your Gold Medalist is so cute!! I've never heard of this book but it sounds good!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :) Jennifer Echols is one of my favorite YA authors.
DeleteThat one's already on my TBR list, but I really need to get my hands on it!
ReplyDeleteAs for the Spice Girls reunion, sadly I was hanging out with my family (who aren't really interested in the Olympics) and missed the whole closing ceremony. :(
Who isn't interested in the Olympics!? :)
DeleteFind the Spice Girls reunion here.!
Aw, I love your little gold medalist! I told my youngest, who is always begging me to buy her another beach ball, that the answer from now on will always be that I'll only buy her another ball if she can learn to do the amazing stuff that the rythmic gymnasts do with them! Your book pick looks intriguing - I may have to add that to my long TBR list. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! :) We recorded rhythmic gymnastics but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I'm sure she'll add it to her list of Olympic dreams. I totally get why beach balls are so intriguing to little ones - I was the same way!
DeleteWhat a cute gold medalist!
ReplyDeleteYour pick does look good. I haven't tried anything by Jennifer Echols yet, but it's clear I should.
Thank you! I do think she's rather adorable. :)
DeleteJennifer Echols is one of my faves, even though I haven't totally loved all of her books. She can write some fantastic swoon.
I've got one of Jennifer Echols books on hold at the library, this one sounds great too! I loved the blurb!
ReplyDeleteIs it the new one? I'm still 8 or 9 places back on the list at the library. So many other great books to read in the meantime, though!
DeleteI was happy to see the Spice Girls, although I had to laugh when they were showing some of the teen athletes rocking out and I was hit with the realization that some of them weren't even alive when TSG hit it big in the 90s. I feel old!
ReplyDeleteI feel old, too! And I can't get Wannabe out of my head. Girl Power!
DeleteI can't think of any sports books! Uh, Gossip Girl? They play lacrosse...sometimes...haha!
ReplyDeleteI tagged you in the Lucky 7 meme :) http://onceuponatimelit.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/lucky-7-round-2.html
Aw, thanks! I'll pop over later this weekend! Also, I'm FINALLY planning to make it to the post office today....
DeleteFirst off, let me just say I love the new look on the blog! That header is especially gorgeous. :) And secondly, this book is one that I need to get to. I haven't yet read a Jennifer Echols book and I feel like I'm probably really missing out. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jaime! I plan to take the same picture of the bridge during peak fall colors to mix it up a little. And I hope you like the book! :)
DeleteI struggled this week. I don't read sports book!
ReplyDeleteAnd I was actually a little nostalgic when The Spice Girls came on. ^^ I may have been singing along. Definitely liked the closing ceremony better than the opening one.
Jury is still out on the closing ceremony vs. the opening ceremony, because we've only watched about half of the closing. I don't know if anything can top Paul McCartney singing "Hey Jude," though... (my son is named for it).
DeleteI'm not usually a big sports book fan, either, and sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised!
I haven't read this one, but it sounds good. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely one of my favorites and Doug is one of my all-time favorite boys!
