30DSC: My Favorite Song
30 Day Song Challenge Day 1: My Favorite Song
I have a number of "Favorite Songs" in different categories but it wasn't hard to narrow it down to one song that, at the end of the day, is my absolute favorite song.
"Hey Jude" by the Beatles.
Yes, the Beatles are the greatest band ever. It's like James says in Sliding Doors: Everybody's born knowing all the Beatles lyrics instinctively. They're passed into the fetus subconsciously along with all the amniotic stuff. Fact, they should be called "The Fetals".
I am the youngest of seven and my oldest siblings lived through Beatlemania. Even though the Beatles had disbanded before my birth, they were a constant for me growing up. I remember sitting between my brother and sister in the van, reaching for their hands and belting out, "I wanna hold your hand;" spinning 45s on a turquoise portable record player; playing a duet of "Yesterday" on my flute at a band concert in sixth grade. When I visited London I made my sister and niece and two of her friends get up very early on a Sunday morning to travel to Abbey Road for a picture of us crossing the street. I was Paul, barefoot, holding a thin white lip balm that looked like a cigarette. I cried when we lost John Lennon and George Harrison. We celebrate the birthdays of all four.
I love many Beatles songs for various reasons: "Paperback Writer," of course, and "Let It Be," which always seems to come on the radio at the exact moment that I need a reminder that there will be an answer. "Across the Universe," "The Fool on the Hill," "Blackbird." And who doesn't love that scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off when Ferris sings "Twist and Shout" in the parade?
But above all others, there is "Hey Jude," which has always been my favorite. I loved it, the story within, even before I knew what inspired Paul McCartney to write it. I love the idea of taking a sad song and making it better, of knowing that what you need to move forward, to move beyond whatever is happening in your life, is within you -- the movement you need is on your shoulder. It's a beautiful sentiment.
I love this song so much I decided at a young age that I would one day name my son Jude, and I was lucky enough that my wonderful husband agreed to it. Our son Jude (aka Toad) was born in 2003 and, no surprise, both he and his little sister love the Beatles.

I went through a Beatles phase as a teenager. I don't really listen to them anymore, but you can't deny they have some great songs. We were playing a game once and the question was name five Beatles songs- it shocked me that out of my husbands family, I was the only one who could do that. Most couldn't even name one!!!
