Gratitude Tuesday #6: Delightful Kindergarten Girl

My daughter officially starts Kindergarten today.

Last night she told us that she was now a Delightful Kindergarten Girl, and a Delightful Kindergarten Girl is helpful and polite.  She then proceeded to set the table for dinner.

We've been preparing for this day for a long time, but not for the usual reasons.  She's not nervous about starting Kindergarten because she's in the third year of her Montessori program.  Kindergarten is in the same classroom with the same teachers that she's had for the last two years.

This spring I cleaned out Birdy's closet and found a box of my old dresses that my mom  had saved.  Dresses from each of my siblings' weddings.  My First Communion dress and veil.  My Confirmation dress.  The dress from my first day of Kindergarten.

Me, 1978

Birdy and I decided that she should wear this dress on her first day of Kindergarten, too.  My mom had made it in the late 1970s and it needed some updating.  My sister Julie altered the dress and yesterday we went over to my mom's for a photo shoot.

Today I'm grateful for my daughter and I'm hopeful that she will continue to be delightful, helpful, and polite.  She's an independent spirit with a healthy dose of attitude and a mind of her own.  She's been arguing with me since she could talk, and while it drives me up the wall, I know that someday it will serve her well.

I'm grateful for the Montessori education that both of my children have received, and I'm looking forward to Birdy's success this year as a Delightful Kindergarten Girl.

I'm grateful for my family, for my mom who never threw anything away.  Today Birdy wears a little piece of history.

Tell me, what are you grateful for this week?

  1. That is so awesome that you had the dress and that you could go back to re-do the photo. How special for you and Birdy to have that.

What I am grateful for this week is great friends, who provide encouraging words, or a place to visit on a weekend and relax.

    Have a great week!

    1. Yes - I hope that someday she realizes just how special it is that we could recreate that photo. Mom keeps telling us she's going to move, so I'm grateful, too, that she hasn't. Glad you had a relaxing weekend!

  2. So cute!! How cool that you still had the dress for your daughter. My little girls (twins) start preschool tomorrow, and I'm glad I'll get some time to write each week, but I'm also glad it's just a little bit of time!

  10. That's so nice that she's already familiar with the school. My daughter started kindergarten last week and it was a new school, much bigger. She's really having to adjust to a lot and isn't thrilled about it.

    1. Yes, that's what happens for us when we hit first grade and go to the public school. My son was the only Kindergartner in his classroom and then went to a big school with a class of 23. Big adjustments! Birdy shouldn't have as much trouble next year, though.... I'm the one that will cry!

  11. Love the photos! I feel so sad that I only have 1 left in elementary school. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that I have 2 middle schoolers! Yikes! Where does the time go? Right this minute I am thankful for my 2 puppies who are keeping me company!

    1. Thanks - I know, it seems like just yesterday she was a little baby! :) p.s. the idea of having a middle schooler (next year) terrifies me.
